Do Not Tax My Credit Union
Monday, March 24th, 2025
As not-for-profit financial cooperatives, credit unions take a “people first” approach. That means a focus on serving members instead of chasing profits.
And that’s exactly what makes credit unions the best option for safe and affordable financial services for families and small business owners.
Take action today through Connect for the Cause and tell your legislators loud and clear: Don’t Tax My Credit Union!
What's at stake
The tax-exempt status of credit unions is at risk when key tax provisions expire in 2025.
The new Congress and administration are moving fast on tax reform, which could mean adding a new tax on credit unions and on the members they serve, including you.
We must act now to ensure lawmakers understand that a new tax on credit unions is a tax increase on more than 140 million Americans.
Why are credit unions needed
Last year, credit unions provided over $35 billion in total consumer financial benefits, and FICU contributed over $2.9 million in benefits to our members and the community we serve.
From no- and low-fee accounts and financial literacy seminars to better interest rates on affordable loans and more, credit unions are here to help people achieve their best financial lives.
Why this tax would be a tax for you
The federal tax-exemption that we are provided allows us to invest in our members and community. Some of the benefits include:
- Lower loan rates and higher savings rates compared to banks.
- Minimal fees on accounts and services.
- Financial literacy and resources to empower members,
- Community-focused initiatives and contributions
For more than 80 years, First Imperial Credit Union has been a valuable financial partner that focuses on serving its members over profit. Every dollar we spend on taxes reduces the resources we can use to provide benefits and services to you.
How you can take action
Federal lawmakers are working on tax reforms. They need to know how eliminating the credit union federal income tax status would hurt the very people they were elected to serve.
A new tax on credit unions would put your financial well-being at risk. Send a message to your U.S. Representative and Senators now and tell them to oppose any effort to add a tax on credit unions.
