How to Identify Fraudulent Text Scams

Wednesday, November 20th, 2024

In today's digital age, fraudulent text messages, also known as "smishing" (SMS phishing), are becoming increasingly common. At First Imperial Credit Union, we prioritize your security and want to help you stay vigilant against these scams. Here are some tips to help you identify and avoid fraudulent text messages.

1. Unexpected Messages

Be cautious of messages from unknown numbers or those that you weren't expecting. Fraudsters often send messages claiming to be from reputable organizations, including credit unions, to trick you into providing personal information.

2. Urgent Language

Scammers use urgent language to create a sense of panic. Phrases like "Your account has been compromised," "Immediate action required," or "Verify your information now" are red flags. Always take a moment to verify the legitimacy of the message before responding.

3. Suspicious Links

Fraudulent messages often contain links that direct you to fake websites designed to steal your information. Hover over the link (without clicking) to see the URL. If it looks suspicious or doesn't match the official website of the organization, do not click on it.

4. Requests for Personal Information

Legitimate organizations, including First Imperial Credit Union, will never ask for sensitive information such as your Social Security number, account numbers, or passwords via text message. If you receive such a request, it's likely a scam.

5. Spelling and Grammar Errors

Many fraudulent messages contain spelling and grammar mistakes. Professional organizations typically have high standards for communication, so errors can be a sign of a scam.

6. Unusual Sender Information

Check the sender's phone number or email address. Fraudsters often use random or spoofed numbers to appear legitimate. If the sender's information looks unusual, be cautious.

7. Incorrect Information

The message references a transaction you didn’t make, in hopes that you immediately call or text to ‘fix the error.’ These are often tactics to lure you into providing personal information.

Here are some real-life examples of fraudulent texts sent to members about First Imperial Credit Union. See if you can spot the fraud clues in each.

What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Text Message

  • Do Not Respond: Do not reply to the message or click on any links. This includes not replying with "Stop" in hopes that the fraudster will "unsubscribe you." When you reply, you only confirm to the fraudster that they've reached a real person, and they will likely keep trying.
  • Verify the Source: Contact the organization directly using a known and trusted phone number or website. For First Imperial Credit Union, call us at 760-352-1540, option 0.
  • Report the Message: Report the suspicious message to your mobile carrier and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
    • Here are helpful instructions on how to filter and block messages on iPhone and on Android.
    • You can also report the message to the FTC by forwarding it to SPAM (7726).

How to report a fraudulent text to FICU

Remember: FICU will never contact you by text to ask for login or personal information, including your online banking passwords or your debit card number, PIN, or CVV.

Accidents happen, though, and if you mistakenly responded to a fraudulent text targeting your account or debit/credit card, here’s what to do:

  1. Don’t hide it out of embarrassment. As soon as you realize what’s happened, take immediate action.
  2. Grab a screen shot of the fraudulent text and report the scammer (see above).
  3. Call FICU at 760-352-1540, option 0 and tell us what happened. Depending on the situation, we may cancel and replace your debit/credit card or take other measures to protect your accounts with us.
  4. Change your online banking passwords and consider placing a credit freeze to ‘lock’ your credit.
