FICU breaks ground for new Calexico branch

Wednesday, January 31st, 2018

First Imperial Credit Union broke ground for construction on January 31 of their new Calexico Branch to be located at 1010 East Cole Boulevard in Calexico.

This project represents a credit union effort and a culmination of two years of planning to create a branch which will serve as a welcoming establishment for financial services including checking and savings accounts, lending and retirement accounts for the residents of Calexico and the entire South end of Imperial County.

FICU Board of Directors and Administration break ground for the new Calexico branch location.

In the presence of City of Calexico, County of Imperial and Calexico of Commerce officials, Katie Luna, chairman of the Board of Directors, expressed FICU's vision for the milestone stating, "On behalf of the Board, we are pleased to take the next step in our growth plan.  We have served the Imperial Valley for over 75 years and Calexico has been a huge part of our history.  We hope that, with our new permanent home, residents can enjoy easy access to banking."

FICU maintains the commitment to the city to keep its doors open in the wake of financial institution closures.  Since 2013, the Calexico branch has continued in its efforts to create a positive impact and experience for its members in the city.  As these efforts progressed, President and CEO, Fidel Gonzalez expressed that "Many people seek our services in Calexico which has caused us to outgrow our current building."

When complete, the 4,000 square foot branch, constructed by Castillo Construction, will be more than double the size of the location the branch currently occupies.  The new location will feature a drive-through teller lane, drive-through and walk-up ATM, member service stations and full-service lending.  The site was chosen because of its high visibility and ease of access, allowing credit union members to quickly access the branch all while remaining in relative distance from the city's main area of commerce.  The new branch is expected to be inaugurated in early Fall.  During the construction phase, the current branch located at 2534 Rockwood Avenue will remain operation with no interruption of member service.
